What are these practices and why are they important?
 
Tahnik is the act of rubbing a sweet substance, traditionally honey or pressed dates, on an infant’s palate. (for our Tahnik, we will not use honey to prevent any allergy to the baby, we will use Zamzam water to soften the dates)
 
Tahliq is the shaving of an infant’s head and giving to charity the weight of his/her hair in silver (or its equivalent in currency). In the Syafi’i mazhab, there is no differentiation between males and females with regard to the application of this sunnah.
 
Finally, Aqiqah is the act of sacrificing an animal on the occasion of a child’s birth and the distribution of its meat to the needy as a sign of gratitude.
 
These rituals were practised by the Prophet SAW and are highly encouraged in the Islamic tradition. As such, we should try to practice them to the best of our ability.
